5 Tips For a Stress-Free Church Renovation Project

Renovating a church is an incredibly rewarding experience and more than beneficial in the long run. But it can also be stressful and tiring. It’s easy to overwhelm yourself and the congregation committee, but with preparation and the right team in your corner, the project will run smoothly and efficiently.

Here are five tips to get you through this transition as efficiently as possible.

1) Minimize Construction Dust

Sawdust, drywall dust and paint dust are going to be all over the church throughout the duration of the project, but there are things you can do to minimize this, so the church can get back to normal as quickly as possible. Stow away certain items around the church that you won’t need for the duration of the project. And to keep the air clean, consider purchasing some magnetic vent covers for any rooms that you aren’t using while the church is being renovated.

2) Invest in Spare Flexible Furniture

As with any project, there will be changes in schedule along the way. In order to keep all operations running, you will need furnishings that can be easily moved from room to room. Always make sure that you’re stocked up on chairs and plenty of folding tables so that you can accommodate all events and sermons.

3) Start a Renovation Committee

Pull together some members of the church to form a renovation committee. Together, create a detailed plan on how you will accommodate sermons, lessons and events. With the committee you can create itineraries and backup plans in case any changes in the process come up. This will help take a lot of the stress on your shoulders and keep the congregation much more organized.

4) Create Fun Excursions for the Congregation

A church renovation is a long process that can be stressful for the entire church. In order to reinforce relationships and keep everyone in good spirits, plan some fun events for the congregation while the church is being renovated. Change in the Sunday routine can be frustrating and scary for some people. Events such as bowling, summer campouts and cookouts can provide entertainment, and will remind everyone why they’re a part of the community that you all have cultivated.

5) Keep the Congregation Involved

Communication with your committee and your congregation will be important during the renovation. The more you talk about what changes are being made, and update them during the process, the more they’ll feel involved and excited for what’s to come. Be sure to listen to their questions and concerns and make sure everyone is on the same page. Let them know how these renovations will affect future sermons, Sunday school, and planned events. You don’t want any confusion or feelings of betrayal along the way, so the more transparent you are able to be, the better.
